In its fifth report, the panel headed by M Veerappa Moily pointed out that the low representation of women in all wings and especially the police force was another aspect of gender disparity in the criminal justice system. The ARC recommended that police at all levels and other functionaries of the criminal justice system need to be sensitised on gender issues through well- structured training programmes. The Commission also suggested that
citizens groups and NGOs should be encouraged to increase awareness about gender issues in society. They shoud also be provided help to bring to light violence against women and assist police in investigating crimes against the fairer sex.
| | Street Romeos.. | | Hi friends ‘Street Romeos’ are found in my place in large numbers. I believe it is a universal phenomenon. They are found in public places, parks, colleges and school campuses, railway platforms and bus stop. These ‘eve teasers’ certainly get some kind of ‘wild’ pleasure in teasing women of ‘all’ ages, more particularly the young women. While working as Principal of colleges, I had to appoint staff to prevent this in the campus. In one college it was so severe that I got women police posted there in plain dress. They used to catch these teasers daily and give them a thorough beating.
What about your place? Are they common, what you will do if you or your wife, sister, daughter is teased. Usually the women here, except a very few keep quite to save prestige. Please share your views.
| | law about arresting women-have you ever heard of such? | | "The law which most are not aware of, clearly states that between 6 pm and 6 am, a woman has the right to REFUSE to go to the Police Station, even if an arrest warrant has been issued against her. It is a procedural issue that a woman can be arrested between 6 pm and 6am, ONLY if she is arrested by a woman officer and taken to an ALL WOMEN police station. If she is arrested by a male officer, it has to be proven that a woman officer was on duty at the time of arrest."
This came in my inbox, along with a "narrative" of a woman who had been raped by a police officer. I wonder if either story is real, (I haven't checked snopes.com yet though) and what happens, or what form of redress a woman has if it is proven that the arrest was not done according to the law. Have you ever heard of such a law? What do you think of it?
| | Are we priming our daughters to be the fairer sex? | | Fairy tales such as Snow White and Cinderella, are they really healthy lessons for our daughters to learn. Both women in these stories needed a man to rescue them, were they really the weaker sex who depended on a man to complete their womanhood or could they have fended for themselves in times of danger. No I am not a man hater or lesbian or anything like that, I just wonder if our daughters are growing up with the impression that their role in life is to tend solely to the needs of their man and their offspring. Do girls see themselves as little mothers or are they given a wider experience in life, women firefighters, women police officers etc. What role models do we give our daughters to look up to, is it the model of the catwalk or one from the 'real world'? | | A young girl raped!!! | | I was talking with my friend of mine. We were discussing the law and women`s rights. She told me about this incident - a young girl was raped by a man posing as a plain clothes officer; he asked her to come to the police station when she and her male friend didn't have a driver`s license
to show. He sent the boy off to get his license and asked the girl to accompany him to the police station. Took her instead to an isolated area where the horrendous crime was committed.

remains to be seen in any situation. But as they say, knowledge is power. Just thought I`d share this with you.
